Steel prefabricated garage shelving is the best choice in this category. You can also purchase plastic shelving, which is OK for light items, but does not work well for storing heavier items. The big disadvantage of steel shelving is that the shelves cannot be cut to size. You are forced to work with standard measurements for depth and length of the shelves. Also, be sure that there are at least two different settings for shelf placement on the frame. The adjusting pins must be heavy-duty and should have something in place to prevent them from working loose or becoming accidentally dislodged.
Start with the bottom most shelf. The largest and heaviest items should go here. Do you have some large heavy books? Or a collection of large books? Or you could slide some really nice woven baskets onto the bottom shelf and have them hold your paperback stash. The point here is that the bottom shelf should have the weight.. both the visual weight and the actual weight. The items you place on this shelf don't necessarily have to be books. Maybe a large vase or urn... or a large globe.
The older corner type shelves used to have a decorative wood or metal bracket that would be visible. Although it was easily seen, it was made to blend into the decor of the room. With the modern corner shelves, they can be hung with out any of the brackets being seen. You can still get a large number with decorative wall brackets, but a floating type design has become so much more popular.
