Quality Counts Look for bookcase shelves that are well constructed and have a backing. Either a solid back wall or a decorative brace will keep your baskets aligned and tidy and prevent items from slipping down behind. A water and scuff resistant finish will add to the beauty and durability of your storage shelves.
Basic garage shelving can be constructed using a piece of ¾" plywood cut to the dimensions you need and set on heavy-duty shelf brackets. The brackets are mounted directly to studs using long screws. The shelf is then placed on top and attached to the brackets. To strengthen the shelf and ensure that it will hold heavy boxes or equipment, you should add a support brace to each stud.
Stack books on top of each other... then on each side, line books up side by side to fill the shelf. Line books up side by side on only have the shelf and place a decorative object to fill the remaining space. Line books up side by side that fill the shelf up and have some really nice looking bookends on each side of the books. Stack some books and place a small picture frame or statuette on top of them Display three stacks of books side by side. Be sure to use a different book arrangement on each shelf for variety. It's OK if you don't have a lot of books. Simply display a couple items on each shelf and leave the open space. Don't forget the top of the shelf. You have the shelves filled and organized... but one of the most neglected area of a book shelf is the very top of it. Don't leave it bare.
